The Grammar Translation Method is not new. It has been used for many years.
In the past time it was called 'classical method' and was used to teach the classical
languages like Latin and Greek. But today it's used for the purpose of helping
students, read and learn foreign language literature. And also makes the students
familiar with the grammar of target language. In this method the source is text and
students are supposed to use the target language
EXPLANATION
At first students read a passage in their textbook. Each student is called on to read
a few lines from the passage. Then they're asked to translate it into they're own
language. The teacher helps them with new vocabulary items. After finishing this
job they’re allowed to ask their questions. This time it's teacher's turn to ask them
some questions. There are three types of questions. One is comprehension
questions which are in English and students are supposed to write the answers in
English too. In the
second types students must infer from the passage based on their understanding.
And the other type requires the students to relate the passage to their own
experienceAnd also this explanation is used to teach grammar too
FEATURES
Way of teaching grammar is deductively (give the rule and then example).
The teacher is the authority in the classroom. The system forbids errors. Just
primary skills like Reading and Writing are developed and little attention is
given to Speaking and Listening and almost none to Pronunciation. Ability to
communicate in the target language is not a goal in this method.
